WCEU Contributor Day – Design Team

Office hours, 28-29 May

Design team will hold office hours async during Thursday 28 May and Friday 29 May. Facilitators @chaion07, @ibdz, @karmatosed and @estelaris will be around all day to answer questions on how to contribute in the design team or help with on-boarding.

Office hours will be held in the #design WordPress Slack channel (WordPress.org Slack account is needed). If you are unsure on how to get an account, please leave a message on this post and someone will reply to help you.

We will also have triage demos on Monday 1 June at 16.30 UTC for Core triage and Tuesday 2 June at 16.00 UTC for Gutenberg triage, both in #design WordPress Slack channel.

How to prepare for Contributor Day?

To contribute to any team at WordPress.org, a user needs:

Meetings for design team take place in the #design WordPress Slack channel. In our meetings we don’t make decision but provide advice on design for both the WordPress software and its components (like Gutenberg) and the WordPress.org website.

We also focus on different projects that take a longer time to be completed.

Our projects require several tools, depending on what you choose. Having access to these accounts will help:

Contributors Day on 4 June

Registered contributors will received an email with the link to the Zoom call for the day. We will introduce the team and explain how we will be working. If you are interested in contributing to something specific, please let us know by commenting on this post or during the call.

For new contributors, the easiest way to begin is to do specific tasks in triage. We will focus on both Core and Gutenberg tickets that need screenshots. We have other tasks available for experience contributors.

If you need any help or have questions, team members will be available in Slack throughout the Contributor Day.

If this is your first time in a contributors day, don’t be shy. The most important things about contributing are to enjoy yourself, be inspired and willing to learn as much as sharing your knowledge.

See you on 4 June at 13.00 UTC.

Show and tell meeting for Wednesday 27th May

It is time for show and tell! At this time, there is no agenda so is your chance to add a comment and share something. Do you have something you are working on to share, it can be Gutenberg, core, meta or even a demo of something cool.

Maybe it’s something you want feedback on that you are contributing, or perhaps it’s something you are working on and would love to bring into the project. Now is your time to share! To share something, just add a comment here and you’re on the agenda!

The video link will be shared in #design on Slack just before. Make sure you download zoom before. There will also be a recording, posted so you can watch async if unable to make the time.

#agenda#show-and-tell

I can show some of the work we have been doing on Template Parts (and maybe even a bonus peek into our explorations with a site-wide column grid).

Gutenberg Phase 2 Friday Design Update #54

Happy Friday! This post should catch you up with the latest design updates in Gutenberg right now. Let’s jump in.

Cover block

Improvements to the Cover block are underway. These include padding controls, color controls, and background controls. If you haven’t noticed, a really cool position control was introduced recently.

Cover block

Rich image editing

The Image block is getting some additional image editing features.

Rich image editing

Site navigation

Navigating through the full-site editing experience is coming along. This can be tested in the plugin right now.

Site navigation

Multi-entity saving

Also recently merged is a first pass at multi-entity saving. It allows the user to see a list of larger changes (especially global changes) that they did to their site before publishing them.

Ways to keep up with FSE

If you didn’t catch it, Anne posted recently about the various ways you can keep up with the work happening on full-site editing.

Get involved

Now is a great time to get involved. While the work on this project is intense, it is always important to glean new perspectives from other WordPress users and community members. Just drop into any of the links provided above to read up on the details, contribute, and leave feedback.

Thanks for reading, staying informed, and contributing anywhere you can!

#design, #gutenberg-weekly, #phase-2

Any PR which has not been merged yet can be tested using gutenberg.run.
One needs to insert the PR number and have gutenberg.run load the PR. It can be a bit stubborn and need a few tries before working, but it is an easy way to give feedback before a PR is merged.

Great! When will all these new features be included in the WordPress core?

The full site editing features like multi-entity saving and page navigation are planned for WP 5.6. The other two features may be in WP 5.5.

Design Team Meeting Notes May 20, 2020

These are the weekly notes for the design meeting that happens on Wednesdays. You can read the full transcript on our Slack channel and find the meeting agenda here. You can join the Slack channel by following the instructions in our handbook.

First, Housekeeping. We can still use more volunteers for note-taking and triage leading. Leave a comment below if you’re interested.

Next, @michael-arestad brings Gutenberg updates.

  • Pattern searching
  • UI parity work between edit-post and edit-site
  • Improvements to the cover block are underway including adding padding controls, improving color controls, and improving background controls
  • Work is being done on rich image editing

  • The Welcome Guide has been improved
  • A few more block patterns have been added
  • The Widgets screen is coming along nicely.

Features shipping with the Release of 5.5: (planned for sometime in August 2020)

Announcement

Discussion

  • Adding a Figma access request rule to our handbook
    • Background: Since we want to give access to everyone that needs access but some people only need View permissions while others need Edit. The Editors count towards our limit, while viewers don’t. Suggestion for the default permission should be ‘View’ and permit ‘Edit’ only when requested.
    • View Access will allow copy/paste permission only.
    • This will also be added as a rule in the Design Handbook.

Finally WC EU Contributor Day:

  • @karmatosed will run a triage for Gutenberg or Core
  • @michael-arestad will run a live jam with contributors on WCEU contributor day if there is interest and depending on the time

#meeting-notes

Gutenberg Phase 2 Friday Design Update #53

Howdy! Gutenberg 8.1 was released this past Wednesday. Some of the recent features include:

  • New patterns.
  • Ability to search patterns.
  • Ability to copy individual blocks.

Query block

The Query block is coming along in this PR. This is HUGE for pages that want to display posts with specific categories, tags, etc.

The Query Block allows users to create a search on the site and choose blocks to display content from the matching posts. This allows users to highlight specific content or areas of their sites.

Block Navigator

The Block Navigator is getting some features that allow moving blocks and other common actions.

Welcome Guide

The new Welcome Guide redesign is about to be merged.

What’s New modal

A “What’s new” UI has been proposed for Gutenberg recently. This will help convey any user-facing changes to users who don’t frequent the make blogs. I particularly love this idea!

Template parts

Continued efforts are explored through design work about how to add template parts, how to select existing template parts, etc.

Design meeting notes May 13th

These are the weekly notes for the design meeting that happens on Wednesdays. You can read the full transcript on our Slack channel and find the meeting’s agenda here. You can join the Slack channel by following the instructions in our handbook.

First, housekeeping. We can still use more volunteers for note-taking and triage leading. Leave a comment if you’re interested.

Next, @michael-arestad brings Gutenberg updates.

Some exciting news: we are participating in Google’s Season of Docs! http://wayback.fauppsala.se:80/wayback/20200530181556/https://developers.google.com/season-of-docs This will help with the exploration of the new categories for documentation that will be included in the redesign of documentation.

Then, @ibdz updates us on the work being done on the Design Team Handbook to improve the flow and usefulness. Current content is being re-ordered, and soon the pages that need it will be (re-)written. Hopefully this will also help the onboarding process for Contributor Day.

Speaking of contributor day, Office Hours for onboarding new contributors should be planned. Volunteers to keep an eye on the design team slack channel and help anyone with questions would be greatly appreciated. Leave a comment below if you’re interested.

For Contributor Day itself, there are some suggestions for tasks:

  • Updating Gutenberg components
  • Picking up Core needs-design(-feedback) issues on Trac
  • Picking up Gutenberg needs-design(-feedback) issues on Github
  • Reclassifying articles with the Docs team
  • Seeing where the Notification Center proposal is at, but that may be quite big

We agreed to start reviewing tickets with needs-screenshots for new contributors and having Monday 1 June/Tuesday 2 June triage as part of the on-boarding process.
