Summary: We talked about what we’re each working on. We are taking a poll about moving or canceling our second meeting of December (as it would fall on Christmas). We started talking about if we should focus on women or diversity for this coming year, because of how it is to collect statistics on them. We started thinking about how to create interviews with workshop participants. We talked about doing year-end self-reviews as an experiment this year.

@miriamgoldman
I’m green! I had a great Train the Deputies session the other week. I was supposed to hold a Train the Trainers this evening, but my attendee is ill and had to reschedule. I’ve scheduled two training dates for December, and one for January.
I’ve also worked in the feedback from @jillbinder on my role, and that’s all digitized.
I do have one yellow, and that’s onboarding new trainers. That’s due to time on my part, and a bit of miscommunication. I’ll be making another call within our Slack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/. channel, and get that rolling again in the new year (because December will be cray cray)
@angelasjin
Green over here! I did a train the deputies session today which went very well, and I need to set up my training for January. Today there were five wonderful deputies!
@jillbinder
My report is last week was a week of finishing things, or closing the loops as I like to say. Along with a bunch of small items that were pending for folks in our team, I also:
Finished creating our new, long workshop!! And I made a decision about that: no small workshop version. I think it would be too confusing, and everything that they need in the small is in the long. I put a note in the Teacher’s Notes at the top on how to create the short out of the long.
And! @Courtney P.K. and I finished the 2 new docs for the handbook! Inclusive Spaces — highly updated from a previous version. And “How to Build A Diverse Speaker Roster” !! Something I’ve been talking about for forever. It is up now!

@volkswagenchick
Green Report: The Speaker workshop was approved for DrupalCamp NJ. DrupalCamp FLorida and MIDCamp will like them in the form of individual sessions (3 or 4). I have submitted the talks to Florida and MidCamp, with my name as the speaker and I am open to whoever whats to lead or co-lead.
I have been in communications with the DD&I leadership team the whole time so we could best coordinate efforts
@aurooba
I have a bunch of feedback from Europe to start compiling and including in our docs, and to share with ya’ll but I’m afraid it’s going to have to wait till I’m done with this launch! I’m hoping Friday I can do a small write up!
2. Our second meeting of December is on Christmas. Should we move or cancel it?
We have our Wednesday group meetings on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month. In December the fourth one falls on Christmas. So. We are not having a meeting that day. You’re welcome. I’m debating with myself and now would like to bring the debate to you: Cancel it or move it to the third Wednesday?
Pros to having the second meeting: I have more time now for doing more work on our stuff, so being able to talk about it would be great. And also there are some year-end wrap up items that are coming up.
Con: Like Miriam said, it’s a busy time for people! And two meetings in a row is a bit of a squeeze.
Summary: Everyone said cancel. I said I’ll check in with the rest of the team as well.
3. Our 2 docs for the Community handbook are up!
As I mentioned in the report, two docs that support our work and will be of great value to WordPress events are up! They were a year in the making, and the last few months especially they got a loooot of attention and edits:
https://make.wordpress.org/community/2019/11/25/handbook-update-how-to-improve-the-diversity-of-your-wordpress-events/
4. Next year’s goals, all diversity vs women
A thing I don’t want to decide today, but I want to start the conversation. I’d like to have it figured out in our December meeting, or first January at the latest, so that we know how we are proceeding this coming year.
We started off this group mostly focusing on women. During the first year, we changed it to all diversity.
Now I’m consulting on what stats we want to report on for things like State of the Word This is the annual report given by Matt Mullenweg, founder of WordPress at WordCamp US. It looks at what we’ve done, what we’re doing, and the future of WordPress. https://wordpress.tv/tag/state-of-the-word/. (a small potential of getting in, but could happen, maybe, someday) and other places that we want to be able to say our stats,
and sadly the fact is it is easier to report on the increase of women speakers than it is to report on the increase of diverse speakers.
There are automated tools that can do this calculation with a reasonable amount of accuracy.
But! We could keep it to all diversity if we figure out a great way to get teams self-reporting to us.
Summary of convo: We’d like the focus to be diversity, but that can be challenging to do. It needs a lot more thought and possibly some research.
5. Interviewing workshop participants
I would like to start interviewing some participants of the workshops around the world, particularly ones who started contributing more to WordPress as a result of the workshop.
Summary: We are each going away thinking about how we can do this.
6. Experiment coming: year-end self-reviews
I want to give a heads-up on something I am going to try in December. We are such a high functioning, action-oriented team who is getting big things done! (Like many other teams in the WordPress space, of course.)
This year in particular, after I tried implementing some unconventional things, I think we really stepped up even more.
There’s another unconventional thing I’d like to try! Year-end self-reviews.
Summary: Team is game to try
