This is where we discuss all things related to translating WordPress. Follow our progress for general updates, status reports, and debates.
In order to post to this site, you will need to log in with your wordpress.org account. Your first post may take a while to show up, as it is moderated. Please follow our tag policy when posting.
There are a number of other tools you can use to translate WordPress projects, most of them are listed below. Just keep in mind that after you finish your translation, you will need to go to translate.wordpress.org and import the relevant gettext files, as the language packages are built from there.
The official Gettext tools package contains command-line tools for creating POTs, manipulating POs, and generating MOs. This tool is for those comfortable with a command shell.

These files are not used by WordPress itself. Each language will have its own PO file, for example, for French there would be a fr_FR.po file, for german there would be a de_DE.po, for British English there might be en_GB.po. and generate MO filesMO filesMO, or Machine Object is a binary data file that contains object data referenced by a program. It is typically used to translate program code, and may be loaded or imported into the GNU gettext program. This is the format used in a WordPress install. These files are normally located inside .../wp-content/languages/.
The Ubuntu Linux project has a web site that allows you to both translate messages without even looking at a PO or POT filePOT filePOT files are the template files for PO files. They will have all the translation strings left empty. A POT file is essentially an empty PO file without the translations, with just the original strings., and export directly to a MO. In general, the WordPress projects on LaunchPad are out of date. If you’re working on a current translation of WordPress, be sure to contact the team before making changes to the translation in LaunchPad.

An open source web-based translation system. The server hosted at locamotion.org currently has WordPress translation enabled on it. As with LaunchPad, check with the current translation team before using Pootle.
