Gutenberg

Beschreibung

„Gutenberg“ is a codename for a whole new paradigm in WordPress site building and publishing, that aims to revolutionize the entire publishing experience as much as Gutenberg did the printed word. Right now, the project is in the first phase of a four-phase process that will touch every piece of WordPress — Editing, Customization, Collaboration, and Multilingual — and is focused on a new editing experience, the block editor.

The block editor introduces a modular approach to pages and posts: each piece of content in the editor, from a paragraph to an image gallery to a headline, is its own block. And just like physical blocks, WordPress blocks can added, arranged, and rearranged, allowing WordPress users to create media-rich pages in a visually intuitive way — and without work-arounds like shortcodes or custom HTML.

The block editor first became available in December 2018, and we’re still hard at work refining the experience, creating more and better blocks, and laying the groundwork for the next three phases of work. The Gutenberg plugin gives you the latest version of the block editor so you can join us in testing bleeding-edge features, start playing with blocks, and maybe get inspired to build your own.

I can't believe WordPress adopted this as the default content editor.

It's not acceptable to anyone who uses CSS to format content, that at a minimum there is no option to adjust margins and padding, as well as most other CSS rules. I was not able to override Gutenberg with my own CSS - even with !important. The Disable Gutenberg plugin is recommended until more than the most basic configuration options are given to the user.

Are the quirks/issues with Gutenberg? Yes. Are there major improvements needed? Of course. But at the same time this project is moving WordPress into the future and the rapid progression of the platform is very encouraging. Can't wait for full-site editing!

I really tried to give Gutenberg a shot. However, there are still too many limitations, too many features not carried over from the Classic Editor. Every time I go to click a familiar option, it of course has moved. This results in a search to see how to mimic functionality. Some features simply don't exist. For instance, I want to create a numbered list for documentation. This can have an image inserted after each item. It used to be easy, shift-enter to line feed, then insert image button. It is not possible to do this in a block. I would have to create a new block, which breaks the numbered list. I had to go back to the Classic Editor to get anything done.

I though that to build a page with WordPress, simply by pasting text from a Word or LibreOffice document was easy as you can do it when you reply on any good Forum boards. Not at all. It's a nightmare! The standard paragraph block breaks your pasted text in hundreds paragraphs, everywhere the "return" key is hit! There is no way to change this behavior. The classic Paragraph block, breaks all the spacing in the pasted text. The preformatted block has practically no formatting buttons on its toolbar. The plugin "TinyMCE Advanced" doesn't help. Furthermore, inside of a block you can't set different text alignment to different rows. I wonder why the developers simply doesn't make an option available where the user can decide whether WordPress has to create automatically paragraphs or not. At the moment WordPress is a nightmare if you need to create pages pasting large portions of text, just simply formatted, from .docx or .odt documents. Also the way back is a pain (copy text from the WP editor and paste into a document)

Gualberto Magallanes Art Design Network
