”Gutenberg” är ett kodnamn för ett paradigmskifte kring webbplatsbyggande och publicering med WordPress, där syftet är att revolutionera hela publiceringsupplevelsen på ett lika omvälvande sätt som Gutenberg ändrade förutsättningarna för det skrivna ordet. Just nu befinner sig projektet i den första av fyra utvecklingsfaser som kommer att beröra alla delar av WordPress – redigering, anpassning, samarbete och flerspråkighet – och som fokuseras kring en ny redigeringsupplevelse, blockredigeraren.

Blockredigeraren introducerar en modulbaserad syn på sidor och inlägg: varje bit av innehåll i redigeraren: textstycken, bildgallerier, rubriker m.m. utgör ett eget block. Precis som vanliga byggklossar kan block i WordPress läggas till, arrangeras och stuvas om, så att WordPress-användare kan sidor med många typer av innehåll på ett sätt som är visuellt och lätt att förstå – utan behov av olika nödlösningar i stil med kortkoder och anpassad HTML-kod.

Blockredigeraren gjordes först tillgänglig i december 2018 och vi arbetar fortfarande för fullt med att förbättra upplevelsen, skapa fler och bättre blocktyper och lägga grunden för de kommande tre faserna av utvecklingsarbete i projektet. Med tillägget Gutenberg får du den allra senaste versionen av blockredigeraren så att du tillsammans med oss kan testa de allra senaste funktionerna, prova att göa olika saker med block och kanske inspireras att skapa egna block.

  • Användardokumentation: I dokumentationen om redigeringsmiljön i WordPress finns detaljerad dokumentation om hur man som författare använder redigeraren för att skapa inlägg och sidor.

  • Utvecklardokumentation: Funktioner för utökning och anpassning utgör själva grunden för plattformen WordPress, i dokumentationen för utvecklare finns det omfattande hjälpredor, dokumentation och referensmaterial för applikationsgränssnitt kring hur redigeringsmiljön kan utökas.

  • Bidragande personer: Gutenberg är ett öppen källkodsprojekt som välkomnar alla typer av bidrag, från kodning och design till dokumentation och ”triage” (grovsortering av felrapporter). I Contributor’s Handbook (bidragandehandboken) finns all information om hur du kan hjälpa till.

The right time but the wrong thing

I really wish you had just created a page editor with all of the awesome features of the current third party ones, but taking it to the next level. I'm very happy with the growth and movement to innovation, especially in this now very competitive space. However, this was just not the innovation that many? most? of us were looking for. If you wanted to create a better content editor, I'm all for it, but this should have continued to be an optional add-on until it reached a point where it was so awesome that people were asking for it to be built in.

Horrendous builder – should be optional as part of Classic Editor

I tried using the block editor and could not continue with it. The following are its main problems but there are more issues with it: all white UI, being stuck together without separation, elements being hidden until you hover over them (how do you know where they are?), hidden elements elsewhere that were so conveniently placed before, sections cannot be moved, etc. Funny enough, new WordPress users complain to us across our businesses about how difficult WordPress is. We then tell them to give us access to install Classic Editor and they thank us and tell us how easy it is with the Classic Editor. We never use the block editor as a company and won't. Classic Editor is how WordPress should be. If you want a better way to add the block editor to WordPress, make it as part of the Classic Editor, next to the "Visual" and "Text" tabs. It should work just like the Page Builder by SiteOrigin where it has a tab next to the "Text" and then maintains the Classic Editor look. If you do end up keeping the block editor, PLEASE make it so that it uses the Classic Editor design, colours, interface, and look, and NOT the all-white-with-no-separation design.

I decided to try Gutenberg since it appears that Classic Editor will only be supported until 2022. I hated it and it was buggy. Hell I rather just write plain html/css/js than use this junk. I'd scroll down the page I was working on and after scrolling it would automatically scroll right back to the top of the page. BTW: This is using WP 5.5.1. I thought that maybe by now it would sort of work. I'm going to look into Drupal or Joomla for kicks. There is also ClassicPress but I wonder how long that will be supported. I want out of WP. FWP.
