- Ride Along: How To Switch From a Classic To Block Theme
The WordPress 5.9 release has arrived--are you ready to unleash the full power of full site editing?
If you're used to editing your website using classic themes and are curious about making the move to a block theme, this is the social learning space for you!
During this hour-long session, ride along with me as I convert my classic-theme hobby blog to a block-based theme.
During this session, we will...
-Make a backup of my active site & copy it to a local installation to experiment
-Search for and select a block-based theme to install
Without using the customizer, together, we will learn how to...
-Create a header image
-Create a navigation menu
-Set the home page to display latest blog posts
-Explore a variety of full site editing settings
I've built a website using full site editing before, but have not yet tried converting an existing one with a classic theme to a block based theme that utilized the power of full site editing; let's go on an adventure and learn about this together!

- Zero to Block Theme Series #3: theme.json Continued - Styles
Welcome to the third session of Zero to Block Theme: Foundations
What this series is about:
Have you ever wondered how themes are developed?
Or, have you ever ventured into the backend of your WordPress website and wondered just what, exactly, you were looking at?
Finally, have you ever wanted to learn the very basics of WordPress block theme development ?
If so, this intermediate learn-up series is for you!
1st Week
Last week’s session covered setting up your first local installation of WordPress, finding your way into WordPress’ actual core files, creating a child theme, and changing a color using theme.json.
2nd Week
Now that you’re able to find all the files that make up a WordPress theme, we’ll discuss at a high level the primary parts of a block theme, including index.php, style.css, functions.php, parts, templates, and, most excitingly, theme.json.
This session will provide a high-level overview of the most important parts of your theme, then dig into theme.json so that you can start experimenting with this feature immediately. It will also be recorded.
If you were unable to attend the previous sessions #1 (Foundations) and #2 (Intro to theme.json) and are a beginner to WordPress development work, we recommend watching the recordings (~1 hour each) before attending this social learning space. For the time being, the recording of last week's session can be found here:
Session 1: https://youtu.be/ntT1GT6Yr3w
Session 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjSZOJZspe0
The sessions build foundational knowledge, so we highly recommend watching both of the previous ones ahead of time.- Sarah S.

- I'm Stuck! How to Find Help with WordPress
Online event
Are you new to WordPress--but perhaps stuck somewhere along the way?
Are you not sure...
Where the best place to ask for help is?
How to troubleshoot a problem when things aren't working quite right?
How to ask the right questions to get the help you need faster?
If so, this beginner-level social learning space is for you!
Join us to discover the answers to these three questions and learn some best practices for troubleshooting, what spaces already exist for you to ask questions, and places where you can learn more about WordPress in general.
The goal of this workshop is to learn how to troubleshoot a problem as far as you can, then find the best source of help beyond that.
This means that if you have a detailed question involving a plugin, code, or theme, we probably can't solve that issue FOR you--but we may be able to point you in the right direction.
Please note that this is a BEGINNER level social learning space; if you are not a beginner in WordPress, but enjoy answering questions, we welcome you too, and would value your answers!
Let's learn together. I look forward to seeing you there!- Sarah S.
