Organize a State of the Word Watch Party for your WordPress Meetup

State of the Word 2021 is just around the corner! This year, WordPress’ annual keynote address delivered by the project co-founder, Matt Mullenweg, will be live streamed from New York City on December 14, 2021, between 5 pm and 7 pm ET (10 pm and 12 am UTC). 

State of the WordState of the Word This is the annual report given by Matt Mullenweg, founder of WordPress at WordCamp US. It looks at what we’ve done, what we’re doing, and the future of WordPress. https://wordpress.tv/tag/state-of-the-word/. used to be an in person event at WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. US and was limited to attendees at the camp. But due to the pandemic, the event will be streamed online this year. As a result, millions of WordPress fans worldwide have the opportunity to join the event live, interact with each other, and even ask Matt questions directly. 

An online State of the Word also offers an excellent opportunity for MeetupMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month). We encourage Meetup organizers worldwide to (safely) host a State of the Word 2021 watch party for your meetup groups—read this handbook to learn more.

Why should you host a watch party?

Organizing a watch party will be a perfect way to bring your group members together and to build excitement after two difficult pandemic years, especially if your group has not had a chance to meet in a while. In addition, it will be an excellent opportunity to build engagement amongst your community members after a complex year. 

By broadcasting it to your group members, you are encouraging them to stay updated on the latest happenings in the WordPress world. What’s more, your community members also get a chance to interact with WordPress lovers worldwide and ask their questions directly to Matt Mullenweg! 

How can you organize a State of the Word watch party for your meetup group? 

You can choose to host the watch party online or in person (if your region allows in person events and meets the WordPress Community safety guidelines). We have created event templates in Meetup.com that will help you in easily creating a State of the Word watch party event for your group.

If State of the Word is happening at an odd hour in your timezone, you can still organize a watch party by organizing a replay of live stream at a date/time that is convenient for your group.

Online State of the Word Watch Party

The simplest way to organize an online watch party is to schedule an online event for your WordPress Meetup group following these instructions and add the State of the Word YouTube streaming link (available shortly on wordpress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/) directly on your Meetup.com page. For a more interactive event, you can schedule an online event meeting using tools like Zoom and use it to broadcast the State of the Word stream, with the help of screen sharing. Doing so will allow your meetup attendees to interact with each other over video, audio, and chat as they listen to State of the Word. In Person State of the Word Watch Party

If your region allows in person events and meets the guidelines for in person WordPress events (if vaccines/testing are freely available), you can organize an in person watch party (for fully vaccinated; recently tested; or recently recovered folks) as well! All you need is a venue that has a large TV screen (that can stream YouTube) or a projector with a decent audio system. 

Group members can hang out together (following local safety guidelines of course) and watch State of the Word live. Learn more about how to organize an in person State of the Word watch party.

Every year, we’ve gathered and narrowed down goals for the Global Community Team. With 2022 around the corner, we’d love to hear your thoughts on what we should focus on next year. 

There’s currently an open call for suggestions—please drop your ideas by December 6, 2021, following which we’ll schedule brainstorming sessions to zoom in on the high-impact goals.

🌍🎪 What’s happening with WordPress events?

Socializing post-pandemic might involve a learning curve, but we’re glad to see some in-person WordCamps scheduled for 2022, and we hope to see you all organize many more! 

Many of you may be looking forward to finally meeting face to face again. Still, we strongly encourage you to practice caution and follow these safety guidelines as you plan/attend your WordPress Meetup events. Moreover, the Community Team has shared how to host hassle-free WordCamps in person and protect yourself legally.

With that in mind, let’s move on to the fun stuff. 

WordCamps on the horizon

Past WordCamps

🇪🇸 WordCamp Spain 2021 and 🇮🇹 WordCamp Italia 2021 took place recently, and they were both fantastic!
Spain kicked things up a notch with an excellent late-night show, which was a highlight of the event. Italy also had a successful event with multiple platinum, gold, and supporter sponsors, 23 speakers, and 12 organizations.

🗣️ Diverse speaker training

#WPDiversity sessions continue into November 2021, with workshops for underrepresented communities and WordPress organizers—we’d love for you to join!

  • Allyship for WordPress event organizers AMER/EMEA, a two-hour interactive watch party where you can learn to create diverse, welcoming WordPress events for your community. This training session will be held on Wednesday, November 17, 2021.
  • “How to Own Your Expertise & Start Speaking at WordPress Events Southeast to Southern Asia,” a watch party aimed to help those from marginalized and underrepresented groups speak at a meetup or WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. in South Asian countries like the Philippines, India, and Indonesia, among others. This session will take place on Saturday, November 27, 2021.

📚 Join the Learn WordPress initiative

We wanted to remind you about the Learn WordPress initiative, where meetup organizers can use content from the learning repository of learn.wordpress.org to lead a social learning space. New workshops, lesson plans, and courses are added to Learn WordPress frequently, so keep an eye out on the platform to stay updated on the latest content.

🗞 News from the WordPress Community

  • WordPress 5.8.2 is now available. This security and maintenance release features two bug fixes, and one security fix. 
  • Go/no-go for WordPress 5.9 features was announced in mid-October. All the proposed features will likely make it into the release. 
  • Gutenberg 11.8 was released as well.
  • The 2021 WordPress Annual Survey is live! Please take a few moments to respond, so your WordPress experience is reflected in the results.
  • Many teams, such as  Core, Community, Themes, Accessibility, Support, Training, and Hosting, opened their call for team representatives last month, and more are coming soon. Please submit your votes for Community Team reps!
  • The Community Team is close to finalizing the Global Sponsorship Program for 2022, which will be announced shortly.
  • Version 18.5 of WordPress for iOS and Android is available for testing.
  • The AccessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility) Team would like feedback on a new GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes, custom HTML etc. https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/ Pull request that announces formatting changes or screen readers.

Volunteer Opportunity

We are looking for “interactive watch party” facilitators for our two workshops. We would create a path together to help you get comfortable with it before starting to present.

Translations

Most items were translated in time in Spanish Latin America and Portuguese Brazil for the Latin America workshop this last weekend, but a few items are remaining in both languages. Please pingPing The act of sending a very small amount of data to an end point. Ping is used in computer science to illicit a response from a target server to test it’s connection. Ping is also a term used by Slack users to @ someone or send them a direct message (DM). Users might say something along the lines of “Ping me when the meeting starts.” @devinmaeztri on Slack if you can help.

Community Team Reps 2022: Submit your Votes

In October, the Community team opened up nominations for new Community team reps for 2022. A little later than intended, the poll is now open and ready for your vote!

Where can I vote?

You can vote in the public poll here. You can vote for up to two people at the same time, but once you have submitted your vote you won’t be able to vote again.

This poll will remain open until 2021-11-29, after which team reps will be selected based on the votes received.

What are team reps?

In the WordPress open sourceOpen Source Open Source denotes software for which the original source code is made freely available and may be redistributed and modified. Open Source **must be** delivered via a licensing model, see GPL. project, each team has one or two (or more!) representatives, abbreviated as “reps”. On the Community team, we ask reps to commit to the role for a full calendar year.

Team reps are responsible for communicating on behalf of the group to the other contributor groups via weekly updates, as well as occasional chats. 

As a reminder, it is not called “team lead” for a reason. While the people elected as team reps will generally come from the pool of folks that people think of as experienced leaders, the team repTeam Rep A Team Rep is a person who represents the Make WordPress team to the rest of the project, make sure issues are raised and addressed as needed, and coordinates cross-team efforts. role is designed to change hands regularly.

This role does have a time commitment attached to it, at least one hour a week. The main tasks include:

  • Writing the agenda for the Community Team meetings
  • Run the meetings
  • Write the recaps and post those
  • Keep an eye on the moving parts of the team and provide reports for quarterly updates.

Over the year, the team can decide to add one or two people to help, depending on how much work there is. For now, the Community team would like to elect two team reps for 2022.
